How does personalization work?

Found in: Messages

Personalization allows you to provide a personal touch to your outbound text marketing campaigns. SlickText uses "merge tags" as placeholders that are replaced with contact-specific information when a text message is sent. These merge tags may also be known as personalization fields, substitution strings, or personalization tags. An example of a merge tag for a contact's first name is %%first_name%%.  Here's an example of how they work...

Let's say you want to send a personalized text message to a list of contacts. That message may look like this...

"Hi %%first_name%%, today we are offering our VIP text club members a free appetizer with the purchase of an entree. Show this text to redeem the offer. Only good for today!"

When Johnny receives that text message it will look like...

"Hi Johnny, today we are offering our VIP text club members a free appetizer with the purchase of an entree. Show this text to redeem the offer. Only good for today!"

When Sally receives that text message it will look like...

"Hi Sally, today we are offering our VIP text club members a free appetizer with the purchase of an entree. Show this text to redeem the offer. Only good for today!"

Notice how the %%first_name%% is replaced with the first name of the specific contact receiving the message. In this case, it's important that we have collected the first names of all our subscribers. "But what happens if you don't have all of the first names for my contacts?" you might ask. In cases where the info on the subscribers is not present, we will replace your merge tag with a default value. In the case above, if we didn't have a first name present for a particular contact, it would have replaced %%first_name%% with "Friend". "Friend" is the default value for the %%first_name%% merge tag.

Merge tags are supported in the following SlickText features...

  1. Outbound text message campaigns (scheduled and non-scheduled)
  2. Text message sent to single subscribers
  3. Auto replies
  4. Birthday text messages
  5. Drip text messages
