New Research Suggests Toddlers Pick Up Mobile Before Potty Training

You probably read that title and thought “there’s just no way!“. But it’s true. If you have a little one in your life, you may have even seen it with your own eyes. Toddlers are becoming increasingly more in tune with mobile devices. For many parents, these smart gadgets act as a great learning tool, and in emergency situations, an effective distraction. If you’re a new parent, you can probably relate. Smart phones are like television to the current generation of parents. Instead of parking their restless babies in front of a big screen, parents are now allowing infants to play educational games on their mobile device. A recent study conducted by the Pediatrics Division at Einstein Medical Center sought to answer the question – at what age do toddlers become mobile friendly? The study was titled First Exposure and Use of Mobile Media in Children.

This study is packed full of shocking, yet useful information. For example, 36% of children under 1 year have touched or scrolled a screen. On top of that, 52% of infants this age have watched a television show from a mobile device. Keep in mind, this data specifically examines first exposure. Now, similarly, only 2% of 4 year olds experienced touching or scrolling a screen for the first time at this age. Taking these results into consideration, it can be observed that the majority of young children experience first mobile exposure between the age of infant and two years old. So, technically speaking, these toddlers are mastering mobile while they’re still in diapers.

Before you know it, infants will be texting. Imagine that! But for now, let’s just stick with screen scrolling.
