We’ve been on this organizational development kick lately. Yesterday, we shared an infographic that got a ton of attention: 9 Values That Fuel the Top Startup Founders. Today, we want to swing over to the other end of the spectrum, and talk about what people are doing wrong in the workplace. The follow mistakes are insanely detrimental to your professional growth.
1. You’re resistant to learning new things.
If you’re not learning, you’re not growing. If you’re not growing, your worth stays stagnant. Your lack of adaptability makes you dispensable. Think of it this way. Let’s say you worked for Apple. Great place to be, right? You’re a flip phone developer. You’re a master at creating that product. But, when times are changing, and smartphones start to take over, you refuse to educate yourself on this new technology. That makes you replaceable.
2. Confrontation scares you.
Let’s face it. The workplace isn’t always perfection. Sometimes, people will disagree. Is one person always in the wrong? Not necessarily. On occasion, it may just be a difference of opinion. But, are you afraid to confront these hiccups in communication? Do you let internal disagreements build up until you finally just explode? This definitely isn’t a great long term solution. If you can’t nip problems in the bud, you’ll eventually find yourself at the center of tons of conflict in the workplace.
3. You don’t have long term stake in the company.
Some people just want to get by. Is that wrong? No. But, in general, employers are looking for people who are in it for the long haul. They want to know you’re dedicated and have their best interest in mind. If you regularly drop hints about leaving, wanting new opportunities, relocating, etc., don’t expect to be taken seriously as an employee.
